Theplanet Hostgator Server downtime

Theplanet being the number 1 privately held dedicated server hosting provider in the world and one of the industry’s fastest, most robust networks (100 gigabits/sec) had some thing instore for them yesterday. At 5:45 p.m a transformer in their H1 data center (in Houston) caught fire effecting a large number of customers’ servers and a big loss to them.

BLOWN AWAY!!!

Loads of people are expressing their sad story in various forums like webmastersworld. The official Theplanet forum are updating this topic on how they are managing things so that no data is lost or damaged.Todd of Theplanet says

Hello,
The team here at The Planet continues to work through the various issues that we continue to encounter. We are still making progress on the previous items that I mentioned in my last post. DNS infrastructure has been migrated to another data center and propagation has begun. We are working through some database issues with ServerCommand and fully expect those to be resolved within the next hour.
I’d also like to address the idea of migrating from one data center to another. During the early stages of the H1 data center we opportunistically relocated some customers to another data center. However, due to network and data center (power/cooling) constraints, this option is no longer available and requests for migration cannot be honored. Please rest assured that our teams are working diligently to return service to all affected customers.
At this time we do not have an Estimated Time to Repair at present; we should have a better estimate this morning. Our staff and management continue to work through the night and morning– we will continue to provide hourly updates.

Also  Urvish Vashi Director, Product Management of Theplanet said this couple of hours ago

More teams from The Planet are coming along with more contractors from key vendors for electrical and facilities to help get H1 online. At this time, DNS infrastructure continues to propagate. ServerCommand servers are installed, but the teams are making sure all networking is intact and ready. In the meantime, please call our support lines for any issues. Additional support techs are available.
At this time, we do not have an updated Estimated Time to repair. Please continue following this thread for updates.

Currently their aren’t much update/data available on this topic and theplanet haven’t updated anything on their official blog yet! Many customers are complaining about their huge loss and are thinking to shift to a new server.

Blogote did experience downtime for 1 hour. This is the first time Hostbrains (blogote is hosted) went down.Unlike others,Hostbrain doesn’t provide 99% uptime but a whopping 99.95% uptime.. ( via webhostingstuff )

I strongly recommend Hostbrains if you are planning for maximum uptime as they have 99.95% overall uptime and support feature is  excellent!

  1. I don?t usually reply to posts but I will in this case. I?ve been experiencing this very same problem with a new WordPress installation of mine. I?ve spent weeks calibrating and getting it ready when all of a sudden? I cannot delete any content. It?s a workaround that, although isn?t perfect, does the trick so thanks! I really hope this problem gets solved properly asap.

  2. @Everyone – My another web site is up and running successfully without any data loss or damage.Kudos to the team who rescued all the websites !!!

  7. An incident like that no one could predict. They must have a back up disk or huge storing device for their backup data.So dont worry they will manage but yes it takes time to rebuild the transformers and servers its not a one night project.:D

  8. @Siddharth – That’s very sad! My other site is completely down from yesterday. They are supposed to rectify everything within sunday night and i cant see any sign of this!

@Ken-G – Yup! Entrecard and hundreds of server went down and thousands of customers have lost loads of revenue. So I prefer Hostbrains :-)

  9. yeah Entrecard was hosted on that only, lets hope they recover most of their data
