Instant bird - The latest version of Instant bird Multi protocol client is 0.1.1,this is a cross platform IM client which supports Mac,windows and also Linux.Instant bird is a free open source software which uses the Mozilla rendering engine to display Instant messages, and the Pidgin libpurple to connect to the different networks.Instantbird and other clients can coexist without causing any trouble and works smoother.
3. Proteus - Proteus works perfectly with Mac OS X by integrating Address Book, Cocoa and WebKit technologies ,also their are options for customizable toolbars, spell checking, integration with system services, drag and drop (file transfers, text clipping) and much more.. Their official blog doesn’t talk much about Proteus features!!
Fire client – Though this was a great Multi-Protocol IM Client For OS X but they have stopped updating because their are no developers willing to work on the project).The current 1.5 version has a Universal Binary supporting both Intel and PowerPC Macs.The Latest released version is working and is still available for download.

i would add to the list meebo which is online so multiplatform and what i use since i never install anything anywhere

I’ve been using Digsby for a while now, and the only thing I’m not happy with is it’s poor support for video and audio calling, but that’s why MSN was made for.

Meebo also available on desktop as an AIR App..

I read similar article also named lti-Protocol Instant Messenger clients for Mac OS X | Blogote.com, and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me
