Adblocker For Opera Browser To Block Advertisement

July 13, 2009

Ok, this is one of the best trick I have tried out personally. Remember last time I mentioned about Adblock+ for opera? The requirement was to add the list manually one by one which was indeed time consuming. And a comment by the reader made me to figure out this new method that will permanently block advertisement in Opera browser.

Blocking ads in Opera Browser

I will make this guide simple for all of you. I got a list from the Fanboy adblock plugin which contains all advertisement urls. So we will tweak the opera urlfilter.ini file that will block all ads, banners from the webpage.

Step 1: Download utlfilter.ini. I have uploaded the urlfilter.ini file onto my server and zipped it in .zip extension. Download and extract it using winzip or winrar program.

Step 2: Open the folder & copy urlfilter.ini file –> now navigate to Opera installed directory which is usually located

  • For Windows XP: C:Documents and SettingsusernameApplication DataOperaOpera
  • For Windows Vista/7: C:UsersusernameAppDataRoamingOperaOperaprofile
  • For Linux: ~/.opera/
  • For Mac OSX: /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Opera Preferences/

Replace username with your system username (Ex: John..or navigate to that folder). Now paste this urlfilter.ini in the folder which will replace the old urlfilter.ini file (You can take a backup incase if you’re not sure on how this works). Also make sure Opera browser is closed during this process.

Step 3: Once you’ve replaced the file, open Opera 10 browser and :D Congrats on making Opera an Ad-Free browser!

The adblock list is huge and I believe all the obstructive ads are completely blocked from Opera. Let me know if you have any issues with the above steps. Hope this helps!

My folder didn't have a file named “utlfilter.ini”, yet it worked! Thanks! :)

THX, It Works.

Just be sure to Place it IN the folder and NOT Extract it to the said address (it should Ask about Replacing it with the same but a lot smaller file).
