The developments around the acquisition of 3Par may have been in the news for the last 48 hours, but it is not yet clear what’s in it for you if Dell actually gets the company. Well, let’s try to find that out right now.
The basic idea Dell has behind the acquisition bid is to strengthen its presence in cloud computing. At the same time the company is relaxed about HP’s rival bid for 3Par. Continue reading…
If you thought processors are fastest and smartest right now, well, think again. Lyric Semiconductor has made claims that they have come up with a processor that uses probability to make computations, rather than the binary mode used by most conventional processors.
If what they say is indeed true, then some computations could be made faster by a factor of thousands and servers would shrink in size significantly!
Though conventional processors working on binary logic work very well, there is a certain degree of complexity involved in their operations. They use 32 or 64 bit floating arithmetic to calculate probabilities and thus they require billions of transistors. Continue reading…
Intel and AMD are racing against each other, and time, to bring out computers which are more fast and efficient. If recent developments at both these tech behemoths are anything to go by, the year 2011 could bring you cutting edge PC’s and laptops. But then who will deliver first?
While only time will answer this million dollar question, both companies are working in one direction at the moment- combining the CPU and the GPU. The fundamental reason behind this move is to make laptops more energy efficient, because a single chip will mean drastically reduced power consumption. Continue reading…
A new lease of life has just been breathed into HTML5 video because MPEG LA has just declared that from now on H.264 / MPEG-4 video compression format will be royalty free, forever. Thus far there have been question marks over the future of HTML5 due to the uncertainties over licensing of H.264. But now all doubts have been cleared up!
People behind Flash video and other promoting the development of license-free software, such as the Mozilla foundation had earlier stated that though H.264 was free till 2015, MPEG LA could easily start charging fees post 2015. And their worst fear was that if HTML5 did replace Flash as the primary mode for video on the internet, both businesses and users would have to pay up after 2015. Continue reading…
Alright. Not just from a geeky point of view, but this video is awesome on so many levels! Akinori Ito has invented a device that converts plastic back into real oil. The solution he came up with is eco-friendly, safe and really efficient.
The oil can be further processed into gasoline, diesel and kerosene. Amazing? Well, that’s not it; with 1KG of plastic waste — from bottle caps to waste cans — the machine can generate 1 Liter of useful oil! Continue reading…

Several summers ago it looked as if Titanic would be the tough to topple as far as visual tech in movies was concerned. But movies like Avatar, and more recently liked Inception, have once again proved that the bar can never be raised too high! And the good news is that some of the tech used in all three films is now available for your Apple iPhone and the iPad.
Autodesk Maya, cutting edge visual effects software, was used in all the films to render some of the graphics which left your jaw touching the floor. Now you can get Autodesk Fluid FX, a version of the software on your mobile devices. Continue reading…
