What is Pocodot.com, asks YouTube Users
Rihanna gobbled up 1 million dollar to sign up for an account at Pocodot, and Lady Gaga inadvertently accepted 2 million dollar from Pocodot. Okay, that’s sweet, but really — what the heck is Pocodot?
Pocodot is a Facebook-killer. And it is pushing hard to make its presence sense on the web. That’s what Pocodot.com is all about, I thought.
However, this social networking website takes the dirty route by using YouTube as its weapon to trick the users. Check out the popular music videos on YouTube and you’ll know that Pocodot has drummed the rhythm out of these videos by dropping convincing comments and rapidly earning “thumbs up” in the comment section of YouTube. Yes, the comments on celebrities tying up with Pocodot are fake.

How is Pocodot gaining massive up-votes on YouTube? That I don’t know, but most of the folks on YouTube are smart enough to hit the “spam” button — as the users have figured out that Pocodot is just another Facebook. Clearly the website has gone wrong in its viral marketing technique.
Here is how a Pocodot profile looks like — yes, I signed up for it. Just for you! 
To a certain extent, the site looks neat with its elegant tabbed feature, but if such awesome marketing tactics are the only way for Pocodot to generate users, then the future of this social networking site hangs on the ropes.

YouTube users, Pocodot is seriously getting under our skin, don’t you agree? As a matter of fact, Pocodot.com is gaining all the unwieldy attention, so much that everyone is talking about this “Facebook-killer” on the internet forums and YouTube.
As you know, the sites’ tactics to gain thumbs up on YouTube has been an immense success. Taking one step further in this treachery, Pocodot has a new “viral” technique under its hat.
The technique that Pocodot is currently employing involves buying a new domain names and then redirecting it to Pocodot.com. Take a look at Hotospot.com, or Pococot.com for instance (not linked intentionally), these sites are nothing but Pocodot’s way of generating members.
The amount of Pocodot bots (that’s how I like to call it) is increasing at an alarming rate as we speak. I would like to thank PoiMage for taking the initiative of explaining what Pocodot is all about: check out the video:
There are at least more than 10 deceiving domain names that redirect to Pocodot. I have really lost count of them. Do let me know if you come across such domain names next time when you browse the popular music videos on YouTube — where the spam comments are usually higher.
Now that Pocodot is really getting on our nerves, YouTube has to do something. Perhaps a captcha box is what YouTube needs to implement in its comment section.
Lastly, I’d like to know how many of you have an active account at Pocodot? I don’t. However, there is one thing, only one thing, that I really like about Pocodot: their creative comments on YouTube.

I just started hearing about this Pocodot thing, but I already have a facebook page, so I won’t be joining Pocodot.
pocodot is not a virus, and is technically a legit site, its just the dirty advertising campaigns that obviously wont make them popular, if you want a real viral website (facebook) you have to have something that draws users in, this pretty much is the same as facebook, they also need the site to be spread through mouth to mouth and that is how fb got popular, not through advertising, but these guys obviously dont really have anything to offer and obviously cant afford adverts so do it through youtube and apparently through fb now as well

So, I read youtube comments, they say the website contains a virus, but I have never been explained if there is or what it does, anyone know? And who cares if it’s tearing down facebook, if it’s almost the same, then why is it such a big deal?
Pocodot doesnt look BAD, but it has crackpot advertising ideas. I might sing up to it if Facebook ever goes down the tubes, like Myspace. It probabl wont for another 5 years, though, so Im not going to do it right away. Lets wait for it to get outa beta so I dont get a virus. ^^

You know that if someone puts his email and his password , and he has a paypal account , they can reset his password and take his money?
And i don’t mean if he chooses the same password he used in paypal , i mean that they’ll click “i forgot my password” to reset it , and an email will be sent to them. Then goodbye money!

The problem is that most comments now disguise the words by using ridiculous characters to throw youtube off eg. PÖCÖDÖT etc. And these bots that pocodot sends out are recreated, tweaked and sent out to youtube videos every day or so

One option might be some kind of automated thumbs-up button, possibly with spoofed return ip address packets and known-response delays along with canned tcp / acks on a timed delay…or via other methods, such as those internet-work at home sites, where they pay 50,000 people $.01 per thumbs up to click it a bunch and write those, or a purely mechanical or technical spambot style hack…probably a good way to make money, although I’m not sure how that site makes money? I didn’t visit it, since hackers are notorious for hiding virii in random data files to exploit popular bugs, like putting a weird string in a .html or .flash file that makes certain browser(s) install a hidden virus, which could then discreetly post spam or thumbs-up as a botnet, along with other botnet tasks such as rented cracking or computing, or anonymous relay.
The registration of the domain is quite interesting. It is registered through the well known “godaddy” however the name it is under is a private company that allows you to register a domain under their information called DomainsByProxy.com. DomainsByProxy states that there site is NOT INTENDED FOR SPAMMING/PHISHING however that seems to be exactly whats happening here.

Actually, Facebook doesn’t delete your account either. It goes into something like “standby mode” and it’s there forever. Unless their policy changed…
U can delete your fb account, but you need to go to the help center and submit a “form”.

The layout for Pocodot is so ugly. And about the dislike button, if you have Facebook you can download it, I know people who have it. I find it quite pathetic that Pocodot is using YouTube to try and get people to sign up with them. Though I do find almost all of the games and applications on Facebook completely pointless and stupid, but a lot of the quizzes were made by Facebook users themselves, the only game that I play is CSI: Crime City, it’s so much better than Farmville and all the other stupid and pointless games. All the Pocodot comments on YouTube are annoying me.

Genius marketing tactic. For everyone saying how lame it is, look at what it’s done; it’s got all you guys looking into to it and thus, reading this article. If Facebook were to do this kind of viral marketing you would all be saying how smart they are. But, since a competitor of Facebook is starting this, you’re all bitching. Although I am not a user of Facebook or Pocodot, their viral marketing was admirable, get over it people…
this is what facebook did to MySpace; its just payback.
See, this is what I feared would happen.
MySpace was at it’s height of the peak in 2006, but then a chain-letter broke out saying that MySpace has become too over populated. I say that people trying to get Facebook famous were starting that letter and sending it all over MySpace. People were getting concerned and decided to delete their accounts on MySpace. Then when people heard of Facebook, they tried it out, and liked it.
A few months ago, the same thing happened to Facebook; a chain-letter broke out. Word of Facebook getting too overpopulated has gotten people concerned and made them delete their accounts. (Not to mention there was also word of Facebook shutting down and people having to pay for it).
So what I feel must be the case is that people from Pocodot are starting up a chain-letter on Facebook to spark-up the process of becoming big fast. Their also making comments on YouTube which are totally fake. People will find out about Pocodot one way or another and they will make accounts on it and Pocodot will have it’s time. (I honestly can’t really speak for the virus/spam part since I have not made an account.)
So go around, look through other articles, decide for yourself what you think of Pocodot. Hope my feedback was useful.

Not necessarily. I started on THE facebook in college. Back then, you could only have a college email to get started. This would ensure you’re real (for the most part) and you could connect with others on campus or other schools.
That gained it a lot of momentum, as I had friends who preferred facebook, because it was a “smarter Myspace.” After that brief stint, anyone could join! And i think it targeted high schools more, because at that age, it’s cool to have older friends. Either way, the rest is history. Now even my mom is on it.
All I’m trying to say is that Facebook had a solid start. No spamming was necessary. In fact, it’s relieving not to get fake, hot girls spamming your inbox everyday.

While I hate the YouTube spamming, I’m very interested in seeing some competition for Facebook. And if they’re really getting celebrity endorsement, then it’s a sign of pretty deep-pocketed funding.
Pocodot is terrible. It is an awful, simplistic copy of Facebook and I do not understand why anybody would want to sign up. A friend of mine had signed up last year after all the buzz started, but left after less than two days because he constantly received error messages and was inundated with spam email (it must have been the site as he had not experienced problems before hand; he still receives spam to this day and has been forced to transfer all of his contacts to a fresh account). I hope Mark Zuckerberg sues the f*ck out of these people. I’m not a massive user of Facebook myself, but I know how it feels from personal experience to have someone rip off my work.

I saw all of this advertising about Pocodot saying telling about how great that it was, so I looked at the web page first, then checked this out and immediately clicked the red X button on my tab! Pocodot is a scam website. If you sign up for an account you won’t be able to delete it. They try to make FAKE messages on youtube that don’t have anything to do with videos and they use fake accounts to thumbs up the comments so they show up at the top of videos.
Pocodot lies, and because of their malicious, petty marketing schemes they’re being chased off of facebook (funny how they try and advertise lies on their competitors websites) and the word pocodot is now considered a spam word on youtube. All comments with the word pocodot in it are immediately spam filtered.
Therefore, pocodot will go nowhere but in the red with this marketing scheme. Getting dirty with the largest social communities online right now does not win you friends.
Oh, also- there are NO celebrities on pocodot. they fabricate lies. Any pocodot messages you see on youtube should be marked as spam so no one else is suckered into this scam.
Creating fake accounts to make fake comments is not clever marketing, it’s insulting the intelligence of their target audience.

Soooo I saw that pocodot thing on youtube and read this article too, and since I’m rather disenchanted with facebook (for instance, the new photo viewer drives me CRAZY, among other things), I signed up for Pocodot to see if it was any good. Then I read all the comments saying there’s no account delete button and I’m freaking a little bit. But if it has better functionality than facebook I’m all for it. Also, whoever’s saying facebook will never be overcome….I guess you’re too young for MySpace? I used Facebook to communicate with my father while he was overseas and im able to communicate with my brothers that live 3 states over. i think Facebook makes communicating with your family and friends much easier especially when there all spread out around the world like mine and in a busy world like today we dont have allot of time to communicate like we use to anymore.

I think the users who comment about pocodot are accounts created by the owners of pocodot because the profiles of that users are all equal (they’re basically empty).And the likes on the comments of this users have a simple explanation… if you like your own comment and then refresh the page you’ll notice that your like was counted (at least it was like this sometime ago) or since there are so many users that comment about pocodot, maybe they vote in each others pocodot comments.
Anyway I just wanted to say that I hate this kind of things, this is not an ethical way to get traffic to your website. A website that abuses of youtube just to earn visitors can’t be a good website!

I saw this as well and I was confused. I had never heard of such thing, so I tried doing some investigation. Out of the 132 accounts that I have checked, all of them were created on February 01, 2011. They all have a country of the “Philippines”. And, they seem to comment on each other’s comments as well as maintain the same amount of “thumbs ups”. This means that they have accounts that they thumbs up each other on to get to the top rated comments. If you ask me, this is just failed publicity.

I was tricked by those youtube comments, and I signed up. It took me until the next day to realize all the comments were fake. Now I feel so stupid. Then I logged on again to try to find a “delete my account” button, but there wasn’t one. And all I could do now is watch thousands and thousands of people fall for the same trick. I soooooo should have read this first!
You know what, I tried everything to locate the “delete” link on Pocodot and it was a complete waste of time. Pocodot hardly has any information on deleting the account; perhaps, it is run by a bunch of guys busy with their schools.
For me this pocodot looks more like a joke: clicking on the Help link: “This section is coming soon.”. The Privacy Policy link: “Really?! Who needs one?!”(paraphrasing).

I too was curious about this new social networking site because of all this viral ‘marketing’ placed on a slew of youtube videos. It was easy to notice a pattern developing across the medium with all the positive comments about Pocodot.
I honestly don’t see how this site really extends past what other social networking sites have already done and don’t really think I’ll be signing up any time soon.
You know, Steven, the site doesn’t even have an “about” page, no information on how to “delete” your comment and no “help” page. The admins are perhaps busy in spamming YouTube — they have succeeded at this to a certain extent.
It’s kind of scary to know if they have any “active” visitors. We have Facebook now, I am fed up with all these social networking sites.

Given that it’s still in beta, I actually believe that facebook, like all companies in Silicon Valley, has a shelf life and that it will soon meet its fate. The barriers to entry are not as solid as people may think. In fact, the name ‘pocodot’ sounds more flavorful, and its brand equity is much more solid than those of friendster, myspace. If there’s an Intel, there’s an AMD to balance it. If there’s a Microsoft, there’s an Apple to balance it. If there’s a Magic Johnson, there’s always going to be a Larry Bird.
I had also replied to a similar question in another post.
Users are finicky. And nowadays, users are even more short-attention spanned. If I had to place my bet, assuming Pocodot has a solid management team and plenty of capital to spread around, they will be the most likely heir to the throne – of course, it will depend on many factors but overall, they seem to be handling it just fine. And, competition is good – for consumers. Without competition, companies like Microsoft would forever rule the world and we would have no Google, no Apple. In my own personal opinion, it’s time people wake up and embrace change and specifically, competition.
As far as the remark about spam – companies like Zynga and Groupon were also seen as utilizing questionable spam techniques. Now, they’re multi-billion dollar companies with extremely high profit margin and used by the masses. If I was a consumer, or a business who was looking to advertise, I would actually encourage and help bring users to Pocodot as that will help prevent monopolistic pricing behavior on the part of FB. Again, just my two cents.
P.S. – i LOV the dislike button on Pocodot too. Finally people woke up and saw the daylight on this dictatorial travesty.

I do not like Facebook. I don’t appreciate the way that Facebook has tried to trick me into sending my information everywhere in the past. I only use Facebook because my friends are on there. Point being: If you can’t pull my friends from Facebook, you probably won’t convince me to join Pocodot. I’m sure someone in your business has a business degree…telling from your advertising techniques it is probably in marketing.
I’m a business person myself, so here is some advice for you. Think of it as free consulting.
Creating a social network requires PEOPLE. Solution: You need a way to get people to your site. This will not happen as long as you do not have a delete key because no one wants to risk their identities to make you money. You need to give people the opportunity to explore your site without ramifications.
Also, I’m sure that you understand standardization and realize that Facebook has created a standard that you simply cannot replicate. If your company hopes to be successful it must generate its own unique standard. This means more than just having a dislike button.
You say that “users are finicky”. I would be careful with that and say that they are selective about the quality of their products. I also wouldn’t call users short-attention spanned either. These are potential customers you are talking about. I understand that perhaps behind this ruse you feel you need to say things like that to maintain your guise, but I don’t think it works (Unless you really don’t work for Pocodot, in which case you fooled me).
A “solid management team and plenty of capital to spread around” are but two of the factors required to be successful. You still need to create a standard. Point being: I had never heard of you before YouTube. You need to create a standard. Unfortunately, so far your only standard has been that you will use YouTube to promote yourself. As to the capital situation, according to a post you are apparently down $3 million (Lady Gaga and Rihanna).
Competition is good for consumers for the most part…you are right about that, but I think that mostly applies to the people paying you. I’m pretty sure that I read that you were free so that would be the advertisers. I can make a guess that if you asked companies to advertise on your site, they would ask you how many users you have…so you should get the users first.
People may accept change if you give it to them…but don’t give them Facebook in a different basket, it won’t work.
As to the spamming and Zynga and Groupon…you may be right about that to a certain extent. I don’t know about any “monopolistic pricing behavior” from Facebook. They are guilty of many things but I have not known monopolistic pricing to be their problem (unless it is a problem for corporations wishing to advertise). As far as the “Facebook credits” are concerned, that did not get them popular and with each passing day makes them less so in my book. I personally think that is what may give you your best opportunity.
By the way, if you can convince everyone that your company is significantly different from Facebook (in a good way) and that you would not abuse your power the way Facebook has…then I think you would gain the support of many people. It is a tall order though and so far you have been heading in the wrong direction.
Oh…and make sure to give people privacy controls so that they can protect themselves, okay? Popularity is a two way street. People can build up your company…but if you don’t treat them well, they can tear it down too.
