Microsoft Surface tablet prices were accidentally revealed yesterday on the online store. The page was removed immediately, but it is now back up and probably won’t be pulled down for a long time to come, as Microsoft has officially announced that it is taking preorders starting today.
The Surface tablet, which has a 10.6-inch screen and a kickstand as shown in the TV ad, will start at $499 for the 32GB version. However, this base model will not include the company’s innovative touch cover, although one can always purchase the cover separately.
Each touch cover costs $119.99. A type cover is also available for $129.99.

Before placing order for your Surface tablet (powered with Windows RT), you should know that only a few countries will be able to receive the slate. If your country is in the list below, go ahead and order the tablet from the official Microsoft online store.
Which countries will get Surface tablets? For now, only 8 countries can order Surface tablets from Microsoft’s online stores — this includes Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Note: The above mentioned prices were taken from the online store and doesn’t include the additional tax amount you should pay.
Here’s a video from the Surface Team explaining how the tablets were made:
As expected, Indians won’t be able to buy the new Surface tablets. But why are the preorders limited to certain countries? It goes without saying that Microsoft is primarily targeting countries with potential consumers — this is not unusual.
Whenever a product is available for purchase, especially from a company that’s settled in US, it takes a good couple of weeks (and even months) for the company to expand its boundary and to reach international customers. We are not sure of the complications involved, but we will update all our Indian readers as soon as the Surface tablet travels to India.
On another note, Microsoft is investing billions of dollars in marketing the slate and Windows 8. Here is the TV advertisement, if you haven’t watched it yet:
Do you think the Surface tablet is fairly priced? The prices are definitely inline with the competition; however, the touch cover is expensive at almost $120 which makes Surface significantly costlier than the Apple iPad.
