“What’s the cost of the upcoming Microsoft Surface RT tablet?” That’s a question we will not be hearing frequently, as Microsoft has finally, although unintentionally, revealed the exact pricing of its Surface tablets that runs on the Windows RT operating system.
The prices of Surface RT tablets were not meant to be announced. However, someone accidentally uploaded the pricing page on the online Microsoft Store. This was first spotted by The Verge, and the image below serves as a proof:
The page has been pulled down from the Microsoft US Store.
If the above image wasn’t clear enough, check out the table below that reveals the cost of the Surface RT tablet:
|Storage||Includes black Touch Cover?||Price|
Update 1: For now, only 8 countries can preorder Surface tablets from Microsoft’s online stores — this includes Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Price of Surface tablets in these countries:
|Country||Surface 32 GB||32 GB + Cover||64 GB + Cover||Touch Cover||Type Cover|
Note: The above mentioned prices were taken from the online store.
Microsoft Surface RT comes with a 10.6-inch ClearType HD display that is slightly larger than iPad, NVIDIA T30 chip with 2GB of system memory, and weighs a little less than 1.5 pounds. The tablet, according to Microsoft, should last at least 8 hours on a single charge.
Covers are the only add-ons available with the tablet. Although sold separately, the Surface’s covers are slightly on the expensive side. Both the $699 and $599 Surface tablets are already shipped with black touch covers, but one can always buy additional covers, if required.
A white touch cover for the Surface tablet costs $119.99. The cover also comes in five colors: white, red, blue, black, and pink. The second add-on is a type cover priced at $129.99.
As a consumer, if you find the covers expensive, you can always choose not to buy them. However, Microsoft has heavily prompted these covers in their latest ad campaign, for they not only look thin but also useful.
Here’s the ad for those who missed it:
Over to you, dear readers: Do you think the Surface tablet is fairly priced? The prices are definitely inline with the competition; however, the touch cover is expensive at almost $120 which makes Surface significantly costlier than the Apple iPad.
A 16GB version of iPad costs $499 and the 32GB version is priced at $599.
Can Microsoft knock the iPad out with its Surface tablets? Let’s not forget that Apple may very soon launch the iPad mini — in fact, the iPad mini will be announced 3 days prior to the launch of Surface tablets. The competition only gets tougher from here. Let the games begin!
