Everything We Know About The PS5, Sony’s Last Hope

Sony has just made official the launch date of its new PS5 and the price at which it will go on the market. As a novelty, the console will come out with two editions : the usual one, with a disc player, which will cost €499; and a cheaper one that only allows you to enjoy digital video games, for €399. It will be available from November 12 in the USA, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, while the rest of the world will arrive on November 19.

Among the main novelties of the device is the inclusion of a very powerful SSD that will go to 5.5GB per second and a much more powerful CPU and GPU (which reaches 10.28 Teraflops) compared to its predecessor that will also have a performance variable depending on the moment thanks to its boost mod : its 3.5GHz and 2.23GHZ, respectively, will be able to help each other at times when one requires more power than the other.

Precisely these are the characteristics that have attracted the most attention: professionals assure that much more powerful and large open worlds can now be created, in addition to reducing loading times. According to a graph made by Sony, the loading time between one generation and another is spectacular: while the PS4 took 20 seconds to load 1GB, the new console will take less than a second to load 2GB.

These are specifically the technical characteristics of PS5:

  • CPU: 8 núcleos Zen 2 a 3.5GHz
  • GPU 10.28 teraflops, 36 CUs a 2.23GHz
  • Custom RDNA 2 GPU Architecture
  • Memoria/Interfaz 16GB GDDR6/256-bit
  • Memory Bandwidth 448GB/s
  • Custom 825GB SSD storage
  • IO 5.5GB/s (Pure), 8-9GB/s average (Compressed)
  • Storage expansion Slot NVMe SSD
  • External Storage USB HDD Compatibility
  • 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive

PS5 graphics power

One of the areas that will be greatly improved will be the sound section. The Tempest Engine system will make it possible to formulate sounds that are more real and present and that are better localized in the environments, that is, they will adapt depending on where their emission source is located. The formula will seek to appeal to the feeling of presence and locality, according to the company.

In this way, following the example that Sony set in its presentation, two similar drops of water do not have to emit the same noise. This is what is known as 3D sound: the PS5 will offer 7.1 surround sound, in which we will truly feel immersed in the video game with almost all the senses, not just the visual one, and we will be able to differentiate several types of sound at the same time, as well as its origin.

The main idea is that this system works with any type of stereo headphones and that, over time, the speakers of the screens and the sound bars adapt to these new technical possibilities.

PlayStation 5 Chief Architect Mark Cerny has confirmed that all hardware features are intended to accommodate new development and design technologies, such as ray-tracing, a technique that allows for much more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections.

One of the main goals of the PS5 will be to achieve 8K as smoothly as possible, in addition to 4K at 120Hz. The truth is that this will take time, since the professionals will have to adapt to the techniques and possibilities to come, and not all games will be able to do it. Most likely, only console exclusive titles will be able to fully exploit all the new features because the cross-platform ones will have to be adapted to a minimum to work perfectly on all the devices on which it comes out.

SSD memory, the key

One of the most notable elements will undoubtedly be its SSD. It is an aspect that will be quite different from its predecessors, allowing 2GB to be loaded in 0.25 seconds, that is, it will have a speed of 5.5GB per second without being compressed and up to 9GB when it is. The 16GB of RAM, for its part, will only take 2 seconds, something that will greatly improve the performance of this PS5.

The last thing to be announced was the controller, known as “DualSense”, which will have haptic technology that will provide greater sensitivity to screen actions so that the immersion in the game is total. The triggers will have adapters that will allow you to feel the action of the game: draw a bow, reload a pistol… any movement of the character will feel like your own.

Ergonomics were not only sought in the controller—which will now combine the color black and white—but it will also incorporate a touch panel and a microphone that will be combined with the Tempest Engine audio system. The duration will also double that of its predecessor, which only lasted 4 hours without charging and was one of the main criticisms of the players.
