Remove Ads from Feed Demon 3 Feedreader

September 18, 2009

Here is an excellent way to remove ads from Feed demon 3 feed reader. Feed demon 3 version is free and a great RSS reader to keep yourself updated with the latest news happening around the world.

Though I don’t use feed reader normally but when I tried out Feed demon 3 pre-release I saw a small advertisement banner on the bottom left corner that keeps refreshing every 2 minutes. Here is how Feed demon 3 looks like when you open it, notice the ads!

These ads are served by deck network and thanks to Malware help we can block the banner ads from Feed demon 3 beta version too. Please note that this method can be a risky in a way, and whenever I’ll find a new solution to remove feed demon ads I will update the post, for now the solution is as follows.

Firstly you have to edit the hosts file and include a piece of code. To do this, we have to navigate to system32 folder. Before that please make sure feed demon is completely closed and it isn’t running in the background process.

Now open run or windows explorer and navigate to the system32 –> Drivers –> etc folder. The final destination should be

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc

As shown in the screenshot above – You will find hosts file in the folder, right click on it and open with notepad or any text editor. Now the important part, add these lines in the host file:

127.0.0.1 www.northmay.com
127.0.0.1 northmay.com 127.0.0.1 northmay.com

Now restart your Feed demon 3 reader, though the space is still seen but the banner ads are blocked! ;)

Are you sure the program closes once minimized?

Actually, Feed demon hides and minimizes to tray automatically (you can find the feed demon icon at the right bottom in system tray).

Open Feed demon 3. Go to Tools and then Options menu – Navigate to the DESKTOP ALERT tab (the third tab) and check NEVER to avoid minimizing to tray.

I hope this helps you buddy.

Dear Rockstarsid,

I just installed FeedDemon 3.0 and I love it. The problem is whenever I minimize the program, the program closes. I then have to press Start, Programs, FeedDemon to get back to where I was. Why does this happen? Is there anyway way to fix this?

Hey, thanks for the source mate.

With the use of HOST we could also remove Google adsense ads from application which is pretty cool indeed.

@Steven Hodson – Well, I kind of agree with you but why pay for something when it can be done for FREE? Moreover there are some people who doesn't have online accounts or ways to send money – still I appreciate your comment.

@Jonathon McDougall – Hey, thanks for the comment. Alright, listen this might sound strange but come on, I have made posts in the past saying the regular readers to make use of adblock+ to block ads from Blogote.com

Browse through the archives! Good luck.

1. download reshacker (http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/)
2. close feeddemon if open and open feeddemon.exe in reshacker
3. in left tree expand folder “23″ and “IDH_THEDECK”, select branch 1033
4. delete whole .. section and line “Ads via The Deck”, delete background-image: url($IMAGEDIR$bg-ad.png); from style and replace background-color: #555555; with background-color: #E6EDF9;
5. click “Compile Script” button
6. File > Save
7. close reshacker and open feeddemon

A better way to edit the HOSTS file is to install HOSTSMAN (free) and use the editor included in it. And since you’re installing HOSTSMAN anyway, use it to add the MVPS.ORG hosts file to yours, to provide some extra malware protection. HOSTSMAN is from Abel Digital, at http://www.abelhadigital.com/

Be sure to get the latest stable (not beta) release.
