The new Apple iPhone 5 — available in variants of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB — is already sold out in India.
Indian users who are taking their time out this week to check out the new Apple iPhone 5 at the Apple stores should return back home disappointed, as the new iPhone 5 is already sold out in all of the major mobile stores in India. Not a single piece is available for purchase.
There are enough evidence that this news is true. After talking to the folks at Reliance iStore to enquire further about the availability of iPhone 5, I was told the “the iPhone is out of stock now, and it will be available only after 2-3 days.”
The iStore staff further added that “everyone is waiting to get this new iPhone.”
Another story from WSJ uncovers that the iPhone 5s were sold out within 24 hours of the launch in some stores. From the article: “iPhone 5 were sold out within 24 hours of launch. It’s all gone,” said Himanshu Chakrawarti, chief executive of The MobileStore Ltd., a retailer that stocks iPhones that has 900 outlets across India.
Total of 10000 to 15000 Apple iPhone 5 units were shipped to India, and this is probably the first time iPhones were sold out, despite the exorbitant price.
Last year iPhone 4S was launched in India without any fanfare, and the device didn’t fare well because of Samsung’s smartphones which were selling like hot cakes in India. Even this year Samsung’s S3 has crossed a significant milestone, but it’s good to see iPhones are finally gaining traction in India.
No doubt that iPhone 5 is expensive compared to the rest of the mid-range Android phones available in India. However, if getting an iPhone 5 from US is not a problem, then wait for another month and buy the factory unlocked iPhone 5.
The new iPhone 5 is Apple’s thinnest iPhone released till date, and it comes with 4G technology (although not useful for Indian users), has 8MP camera, HD video calling and ships with the new iOS 6 (which is not jailbreakable) firmware. For more info, check out our iPhone 5 tag.
